Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in each of the two shows she starred in on Roseanne. Her parents, however, didn't want her to take on acting roles until she was an adult fearing the effect of stress. Perry states that she did not want to be an actor in high school but decided to take up playing as a way to make friends at Northwestern University when she switched from Boston University. Perry went on to New York, where she landed small roles in series such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Home sickiness caused Perry home to California which was where theatre jobs were readily available. The Other Place was performed by her mother and her on Broadway in 2013. The show was directed by Eugene O'Neill. Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie and Kevin McKidd. This was presented at West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family. In 2017, Perry had a minor role on ABC's thriller about politics Scandal that starred her father. Also, she was cast on the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger of Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. The character was picked through an audition, even the fact that she had a deep association with it.
